Operating a fire hose effectively is crucial for firefighting efforts. Here are the general steps tr correctly operate a layflat fire hose.
Preparation
Before operating the hose, ensure that you are wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE). These include turnout gear, helmet and gloves.
Size-Up
Assess the fire situation and determine the right size and type of hose to use. Consider factors such as the size of the fire and available water supply.
Connect the Hose
Connect the fire truck hose to a water source, such as a fire hydrant, standpipe, or fire engine. Ensure that all connections are secure to prevent leaks.
Charge the Hose
Open the water supply valve gradually to charge the hose with water. Then check for any leaks or kinks in the hose that may impede water flow.
Advance the Line
Advance the charged hose line toward the fire while maintaining proper hose management techniques. Avoid dragging the hose over sharp edges or rough surfaces that could damage it.
Control the Nozzle
The firefighter operating the nozzle should adjust the nozzle pattern and flow rate based on the fire conditions. Start with a straight stream or solid stream for penetrating the fire, then switch to a fog pattern for cooling and controlling the fire’s spread.
Reposition as Necessary
As the fire changes or progresses, be prepared to reposition the hose line to maintain effective water application. This may involve advancing closer to the fire or withdrawing to a safer position.
Shut Down Safely
When the firefighting operation is complete, shut down the hose line safely. Close the water supply valve gradually to relieve pressure.
Drain and Stow
After use, drain any remaining water from the hose to prevent freezing or damage. Then coil or pack the hose neatly for storage or transport. But ensure that it is ready for future use.
