Hydraulic hose quality standards
SAE and EN standards
Manufacturers in the US, Australia and Europe adhere to two sets of quality standards. One is the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J517 and the other is the European Code (EN) standard.
SAE standard
The SAE hose standard is the most popular benchmark for the hydraulic industry. More specifically, the J517 is a guide for the current SAE 100R Series hydraulic hoses. There are 16 hose styles.
SAE assigns it as 100R1 to 100R16. Each style must meet the size and performance characteristics specified by SAE.
Meeting the SAE standard is voluntary. Developing these standards is just to ensure similarities between the product and the different manufacturers.
EN standard
The EN standard has evolved from the DIN German standard. Asian manufacturers also follow these standards, but they prefer EN specifications.
This is mainly because the EN grade hose has a higher pressure rating than the equivalent SAE hose. This provides a better safety factor.
