Throwing a Lay-Flat Fire Hose
1. Pre-Roll the Hose
Start by rolling up the fire hose. Slightly misalign the two connectors when beginning the roll, then fold the hose in half and start rolling from the middle. Finish by forming a tight disk with both connectors positioned at the top.
2. Execute the Throw
Hold the rolled hose in your hands. Use your forearm to throw it forward at a 45-degree angle. As you release, let go with all fingers except your thumb and index finger. This will launch the main body of the hose, leaving only the two connectors in your grasp.
3. Secure and Advance
Place one connector on the ground or attach it to a fire hydrant, fire truck outlet, or water distributor. Grab the other connector and sprint forward while simultaneously retrieving a water gun to attach to the hose.
Key Tips for Accuracy:
Regular training is essential to throw the hose straight, fast, and accurately.
Build arm strength for better control. If arm strength is limited, use a foot to kick the hose body during Step 2 to speed up the roll and release.
Recycling a Fire Hose
1. Retract the Hose
After use, quickly pull back one end of the hose to begin gathering it.
2. Align Connectors
Ensure the two hose connectors are 10–20 centimeters apart for easy handling.
3. Start Rolling
Grasp the middle of the hose with both hands and use your fingers to roll it forward. Maintain a steady, even pace.
4. Finalize the Roll
When the hose roll reaches a radius of about 10 cm, shift your grip: use your left hand as a support point while your right hand grabs both sides of the hose and pushes forward clockwise until fully coiled. Pro Tip: If the hose knots during rolling, use your foot to gently pull apart the lower section and speed up the process.
